York Land Yacht Club National Regatta 29th February / 1st March 2020
YLYC hosted a National - British Landsailing event on the weekend of 29th February and 1st March 2020.
A small fleet of diehard pilots made the journey to Elvington airfield on Saturday. The weather forecast was for wet and windy conditions with the extra hazard of strong gusts. Several pilots who had registered online chose not to make the journey believing that the conditions were unlikely to be conducive with racing. The wind strength was on its top limit for what is considered safe for racing on an airfield, but the Sailing Master and pilots were happy to give it a go, which lead to some fast and exhilarating racing on the first day.
The pilots thanks must go to all the non-sailing supporters for without their help these events would not take place. In particular thanks are due to one of our new Sailing Masters; Christine Heath overseeing the Miniyacht class with their strange dial up session before the race starts, a system borrowed from water sailing, but alien to the larger land yachts who start on a grid system. A protest was lodged at the end of the first race as most pilots were expecting the normal two minute dial up, whilst a couple only did one minute. Even in the Miniyacht class, Chris Wright recorded a maximum speed of 49.9mph on the downwind section of the runway, so the larger classes must have achieved even higher speeds, but that said with small fleets in each class all the sailing was conducted in a safe manner and without incident.
Unfortunately no sailing took place on Sunday due to the continued bad weather, so most people were content for the event to finish early and allow those who had to travel a long distance home to do their journey in daylight.
This was the second regatta of the season 2019/20 the first being at Brean SYC 12/13 October 2019, but that was a non-event due to a lack of wind and as we are now in lockdown with events being postponed/cancelled the likelihood of any more competitions before the season ends is looking extremely unlikely.
