British Landsailing Redcar Regatta. Information for the public
The beach and promenade at Majuba Road provide a safe place for spectators to get close to the action.
With opportunities to meet the pilots and explore some of the yachts, the day will be open for families and children.
All four classes of land yachts will take part, from the highly maneuverable Minis to the large and powerful Class 3 yachts, and sleek Class 5 and Standart yachts.
British Landsailing is grateful to the people of Redcar for allowing us to use your brilliant beach and Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council for their support in helping us to stage this event.
The regatta is also being supported by the Friends of Redcar and Cleveland Golf Club.
Organiser Kevin Skelton said: "With the success of the last 4 years and the brilliant reception we received from the people of Redcar, we're hoping this will be an occasion for everyone to enjoy."
To make sure the event runs smoothly, organisers are seeking any volunteers who wish to take part in marshaling the days' activities.
Councillor Carl Quartermain Cabinet Member for Tourism, Culture and Communication said: "We are really pleased to be hosting this exhilarating and dramatic sport in our borough.Watching the Regatta is a fantastic day out by the seaside, and it looks like it will be a great weekend for it, if the weather remains kind to us!"
Depending on the weather, the Redcar Regatta is due to run from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 16th June and 10am to 3pm on Sunday 17th June. Part of Coatham Beach will be closed to the public for the Regatta, but people can watch the activities from Majuba Road promenade and car park..
If you're interested in volunteering to marshal the days' events, please email Kevin Skelton at [email protected]
Sand sailing is coming home. Roll On 2018
Although Royal Sand Yacht Club, De Panne, Belgium, established in 1924, is generally accepted to be the world’s first sand yacht club, the beaches of Redcar and Saltburn may have an earlier claim.
The Sand Sailing Club based at Saltburn, was established in May 1909 with the local MP, the Right Hon. Herbert Samuel serving as President. Although only short lived, this club does have a reasonable claim to being one of worlds first land yacht clubs and certainly puts Redcar and Cleveland firmly in the vanguard of land yacht development. The beaches of Redcar and Saltburn continued to provide a valuable proving ground for developers of land yachts through out the last century. Races were held regularly and during the 1970’s the Cleveland Land Yacht Club operated from Coatham and organised local and national regattas. Older members of the British land sailing community have fond memories of sailing at Redcar. Competitive landailing returned to Redcar in 2013 and the National Championship Redcar Regatta is now an annual event. Coatham beach is still considered to be one of the best land sailing venues in the country. So once again it is great to be back in Redcar. 'Sand sailing' is coming home!
